All formats with the exact same content must be priced the same. Also, promote the fact that you produce multiple formats upon request.
Pricing: While it may be tempting to charge more for formats that cost more for production, you must ensure that all formats with the same content also have the same price. To do otherwise would be to discriminate against people who require multiple formats to access your information and this would contravene the Canadian Charter or Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act.
If the original print product is free so too must be all of its multiple formats.
Promotion: It is good business practice to actively promote the availability of multiple formats to serve all of your clients.
1. Include a message in all products: "This publication is available upon request in accessible multiple formats." This message can be produced in braille and large print.
You could also include additional text to make it clear what
is meant by "Multiple formats":
"These formats, which include audio cassette, braille and
electronic text, provide access for people who do not read
conventional print."
2. Include a promotional line in your product catalogues: "Printed publications are also available in multiple formats."
3. Include varied media in your advertising campaigns: Reach people with disabilities by using a mix of media advertising including radio, television, Web sites, Internet news groups and radio reading services.
4. Register with
1 800 O-Canada (1 800 622-6232): The Government of Canada's
toll-free information line (TTY 1 800 465-7735) is used by many
people with disabilities to obtain government information.
