As with all publications, multiple formats must be assigned an International Standard Number and copies sent to the Depository Services Program (DSP).
Many departments are not aware that they must file copies of every publication with the Depository Services Program. The DSP maintains a large library of government publications with the primary objective to ensure that Canadians have ready and equal access to federal government information. The DSP distributes government publications to a large network of libraries and institutions. The number of publications required for the Program varies with the language, subject and intended audience of the publication.
The DSP is also contacted to obtain a Government of Canada Catalogue Number and ISBN (International Standard Book Number) or ISSN (International Standard Serial Number).
Each format requires a separate number. ISBN's are typically
used for books while ISSN's are used for periodicals such as
newsletters.
