About this Office

Background

The Canadian Assistive Technology (AT) and Assistive Devices (AD) industry is tracked and supported by Industry Canada. This support is provided to Canadian companies, research organizations and post-secondary institutions in the form of intelligence gathering and dissemination, sector analysis and trade promotion. The AT/AD Industry Sector Office's objective is to provide support to organizations that develop, produce and/or market products, systems and services for people with disabilities, including both the high and low-tech sectors of this growing industry.

General Description

The workplan for supporting the AT/AD industry is divided into three broad areas of activity:

  1. Industrial Development Strategy which includes encouraging the development and promotion of accessibility standards, promoting the Canadian AT/AD industry through newsletters, web-sites and conference presentations, the promotion and update of the Accessible Procurement Toolkit which educates managers in procurement issues and managing AT-Links which is the AT portal of the Government on-line Disability Cluster.

  2. Market Development and Support which includes the development of statistics on the Canadian AT/AD industry and linking with other industry sectors.

  3. Industry Liaison and Advocacy which includes support to the Minister's Advisory Committee, working with international bodies such as the European Union and working with other government and non government bodies.
